The expensive mistake is skipping the narrowing and jumping straight to a single choice, because changing a finish on paper costs nothing and changing it after installation costs real money and time. A homeowner who hasn't compared real alternatives side by side often can't tell whether they actually prefer a choice or simply haven't seen a better one yet.
